A solid insulation installation is important for energy efficiency. It can help keep the home comfortable and lower energy bills. If your insulation’s performance is lacking, there are simple ways you can improve it. This video will explain how to beef up the insulation in your attic to improve your home’s energy efficiency.

Blown-in insulation will settle over time, so you will need to renew it with cellulose insulation later down the line. Sometimes it is blown in with a machine, but you can also manually install it with a rake and your hands. Fill up the rafters, and level it out with a rake. The contractor and homeowner in this video are able to get it six inches deep, which is not enough to get the job done.

The contractor then installs nine and a half inch fiberglass insulation on top of the cellulose. Make sure you have long sleeves, gloves, and a mask on when you are installing the fiberglass insulation to prevent your skin from becoming irritated. Install the sheets perpendicular to the roof joints to really seal everything.

You can use a specialized knife designed to cut fiberglass insulation to fit the sheets in awkward positions. You don’t want any gaps in coverage, or the insulation will be compromised. For more information, check out the video above.
